FIPA Reformed as an IEEE Standards Committee

On 8 June 2005, FIPA was officially accepted by the IEEE as its 11th standards committee

A presentation outlining the scope of FIPA's new mandate will be given at the upcoming AAMAS conference on 29 July 2005 at 10:30–12:30h. This meeting will also serve to elicit suggestions on future activities.

Formed in 1996, FIPA's mandate was to produce software standards specifications for agents and agent-based systems. In 2005 it was realised that these standards should be broadened to encompass other software engineering technologies with which agents increasingly interoperate.

Thus the new FIPA Standards Committee will begin by transferring all existing FIPA standards to the new IEEE-based organization. Members will then work to both improve existing standards and identify new standards that the agent community vitally needs. Scope will include, for example, human and machine interaction, social and business type interactions, agent technology interoperability and other areas the membership deems appropriate. The committee will also work closely with other communities and bodies such as Semantic Web, W3C, GRID, Global Grid Forum, Web Services, BPM, etc.

The first technical meeting of the FIPA IEEE SC will take place in Budapest, Hungary, 13–14 September 2005, just before the CEEMAS 2005 Conference.
